File Extension

A file extension is the identifier of a file that comes at the end of a file name after the period. It has usually three or four letters and tells you about the characteristics of a file and its use. Also, it tells the computer which program to use when opening the file. Examples of file extensions are .doc or .docx for Word documents or .mp3 for MP3 audio files.
